Aero Defence on DISC 2015

Tuesday, February 16, 2016

During 2015 our Business Development Manager Darren Baber was able to participate in the 2015 Defence Industry Study Course (DISC) across a number of weeks visiting various Defence bases and industry sites.

This included attending Exercise Talisman Sabre to see how Australian capability is utilized on land operations, observing KC-30A refueling operations mid-flight, at-sea exercises on an Anzac class frigate and walkthroughs of Australia’s new Air Warfare Destroyer.

The Defence and Industry Study Course (DISC) and its predecessor, the Industrial Mobilisation Course, have been run annually by Defence for more than 50 years. The DISC has been designed to help participants develop a better understanding of both Defence and industry in order to improve Australia's Defence industry capabilities.
The course doesn’t just primarily focus on the military operating environment and a key part of the course is the industry engagement with suppliers and manufactures that help innovate and deliver the world class capability which is the Australian Defence Force. Airbus, Thales Underwater Systems, Marand Precision Engineering, DSTO are just a handful of Industry sites that welcomed Darren and the other DISC participants to gain insight and engage with personnel to appreciate and recognise the growing contribution that local Australian industry has in direct support of operational capabilities.

During his time on DISC, Darren has advised “It was a really engaging experience with Defence as a whole and really helped me developed an understanding and appreciation to the all the support functions that are crucial to enabling the Australian Defence Force for training and operational capabilities. It’s truly a privilege to see the products that Aero Defence supplies to the Defence Force and supporting prime contractors applied in an operational context and utilized in Defence manufacturing.

On top of the first hand insight and I have also developed many great relationships with other course participants from the APS, ADF and Industry. I have no doubt that collectively we can all make lasting positive contributions to Australian capability. It was a real highlight to meet with Chief of Defence Force Air Chief Marshal Mark Binskin and discuss the role of the companies like Aero Defence and how we are a crucial support mechanism to the ADF."

This is only a small snapshot of Defence and industry based activities that will allow Darren and Aero Defence to develop ongoing networks with industry, the ADF and other personnel involved in the acquisition and sustainment decision-making process that is crucial to uniting industry and Defence.
